Prevention, Care, and Rehabilitation
On the occasion of the 33rd FIDE World Senior Individual Chess Championships 2025, hosted in Gallipoli (LE) from October 20 to November 2 at the Grand Hotel Costa Brada, we are pleased to announce a partnership with LILT – the Italian League for the Fight against Cancer, Lecce Provincial Association, aimed at raising awareness and funds for cancer prevention initiatives in the Lecce area.
The proceeds from these charitable initiatives will support the fundraising campaign to purchase new technological equipment for Centro ILMA, the Multidisciplinary Institute for Cancer Research, Prevention, Care, and Rehabilitation.
The goal is to equip the Center with diagnostic instruments to expand screening programs and improve the quality of services offered to the community.
The collaboration includes the organization of two side events, open to both the public and tournament participants, with the aim of directly supporting LILT’s activities:
• Blitz Tournament – To be held on Thursday, October 23. This will be a fast tournament in the classic blitz format (5’ + 2”), with part of the entry fees and/or prizes donated to the fundraising initiative.
• Charity Simul – Scheduled for Monday, October 27, this event will feature a Grandmaster or several Masters playing simultaneously against multiple opponents. The participation fees will be entirely devolved to LILT.
Through these initiatives, the chess event becomes a vehicle for solidarity and shared values, combining the “game of the mind” with a tangible social cause: supporting cancer prevention and the healthcare and awareness activities carried out by LILT in the Salento region.
We invite media, citizens, chess enthusiasts, and newcomers to actively take part in these events, which will be held on the scheduled days during the tournament (the detailed timetable will be announced shortly). Every contribution, no matter how small, represents valuable support for research, awareness, and assistance to people affected by cancer.
We trust that this collaboration will create mutually beneficial visibility opportunities, fostering dialogue between the chess community and the healthcare voluntary sector.
